One of my favourite parts of editing STELLAR for six years was writing the celebrity content. From news to style, beauty to pop culture, I relished in documenting the A-list zeitgeist and it just always brought me great happiness to wax lyrical about the rich and the famous. Importantly, it was never unkind. I have never been in to the kind of journalism designed to tear people down - no to circles of shame, unflattering angles or snarky commentary, thankyouverymuch.
My particular favourite regular piece, one nobody else dared offer to write, was what we called The List. I first came up with the format when I was editing a magazine at the Irish Independent called INSIDER; I wanted to write a pop culture listicle (Buzzfeed was so hot in 2014) but in print form - well researched, thoughtfully compiled, a nice balance of old and new and a way to actually utilise my degree in Film Studies, LOL. I transferred this list format to STELLAR when I took over, and relished writing it every issue. I never ran out of ideas, from the 12 Greatest LGBTQ+ Shows on TV for Pride, to The 16 Greatest Reality Stars of All Time.
So please allow me to continue this passion, but in a more personal way. This isn’t a magazine’s list of the best celeb couples around. This is MY list of MY faves. Sure isn’t that why I have my own newsletter!
Some of these couples are no longer with us, and some aren’t together any more. But to me, they’ll always be goals. (If I’ve omitted your fave, it means they don’t do it for me. Soz, Beyonce and Jay-Z).
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton
Like many others, I think Dick was Liz’s one true love, but they just couldn’t get it together. Addiction, infidelity, egos and fame all came between them not once, but twice. But if you ever saw them together in a movie or on a red carpet, the atmosphere between them was electric.
Michelle and Barack Obama
These two are top of my list of couples I would be actually upset if they split. They are so mutually respectful, attentive and honest about the realities of marriage, and hopefully if they can survive eight years in the White House, they can survive anything.
Speidi
Look, they’ve proved us all wrong. Fair fucks.
Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks
These two have been hitched for 35 years, and he converted to Greek Orthodox to marry her back in 1988. Whatever they’re doing, it works. They’re even a producing power couple, responsible for both My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Mamma Mia.
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr
God, teenage me loved both of them fiercely, and I love them still! Both SMG and FPJ are back in the spotlight of late, having taken time out to raise their kids. I wish them continued happiness, because they give my little 90s hun heart hope.
Ramona and Mario Singer
These two crazy kids just can’t seem to work it out. The RHONY stars were the ones with what seemed like the most rock-solid marriage, but a mid-life crisis screwed it all up. They’re still on good terms and spent the pandemic together, so I hold out hope. But Ramona is living her best single and sixty-something in the city life.
Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent
My HGTV faves, they are beyond stylish and gorge together. Nate lost his former partner in the horrifying tsunami that hit South East Asia in 2004, so it’s lovely to see him find a husband to raise children with after such tragedy.
Bennifer
Ugh, I adore them. Thrilled they got their second chance. Be happy, you guys! Eat the Dunkin Donuts, JLo!
Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell
Iconic. Never married, never needed to.
Barbra Streisand and James Brolin
Barb’s husband is one of the dishiest silver foxes around, and when I saw her on tour in 2007, he came out on stage to dance with her every night. He also tolerates her having an entire street of shops in their basement. Legends.
Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor
Impossibly chic, they DGAF about the age difference or what people say. Love that for them.
Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey
Look, I know it’s for the best that they didn’t work out and they’re both very happily married to other people. I know that it seemed like they actually hated one another, and I wouldn’t recommend marrying someone you’ve never slept with. But they were a seminal part of my youth and reality TV journey, and I will always love them.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
Team Sussex. They’re annoying, but they’re perfect for one another. I believe in them! Just stop calling him H and Haz, Megs!
Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky
I’m overly attached to a lot of Bravo couples - see also: Lisa Vanderpump and Ken Todd, Candiace Dillard and Chris Bassett, Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker, and Melissa and Joe Gorga - but these two are Mom and Dad.
And there are some that I just ship, like Meghann Fahy and Leo Woodall from The White Lotus, Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen, Jonathan Groff and me (sorry Joe, just testing to see if you’re reading this), Leo and Kate (when he FINALLY grows up, sorry to her husband Ned RocknRoll), Paul Mescal and Eve Hewson… a gal can but dream. Happy V-Day, y’all! <3
Not Speidi..... Vicki.
Also clicked through to your Stellar article on all-time reality icons, and we'd have to insist Tiffany 'New York' Pollard sits at the top of that pile. Iconic.
